Numerous studies conducted all over the globe have enlisted the negative effects of smoking on women and men’s health. A study by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine has enlisted some very grave after effects of smoking on women’s health, one of which is infertility.

Smoking and Infertility

Loss of eggs, premature menopause, damages to the internal reproductive organs, increased risk of miscarriages, genetic abnormalities, are some of the negative effects that smoking causes in women.

Chemicals in smoking are known to interfere with the functioning of ovaries and production of estrogen. There have been reports linking smoking to ectopic pregnancy also. Besides these, smoking can cause the baby to be born to have low-birth weight or sudden infant death syndromes (SIDS)

It has been observed by the study that smokers, more than non-smokers have higher chances of undergoing for multiple cycles in their in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. This is evidence of the fact that smoking causes lower implantation rates and less production of eggs amongst many other critical factors like estradiol levels. However, these are prevalent in cases with women who have been smoking for a long period of time. The study enlists cases where women who have given up smoking two months prior to the IVF treatments have shown better chances of conception. Besides causing infertility, recurrent miscarriages, smoking has also proven to be harmful in older women.

Overall, smoking has significant contributions in the negative effects on women’s health. Smoking not only causes cancer, it is a major cause of difficulty in conceiving, miscarriages and menopauses. Besides, it has also been linked to impotence in men. Therefore, either of partners who have been smoking to long period of time has shown problems related to reproduction.

Smoking is one of the major causes of death in the whole world. In America alone, one in every five deaths occurs due to smoking. Although it is difficult to get rid of smoking addiction, it is not impossible at all. Following are the ways through which you can put an end to this habit and stay healthy for the rest of your life.

  • Whenever you feel like smoking, light the cigarette to have only one or two puffs, then put it off and save it for the next crave.
  • Promise your partner that you would not smoke without seeking his/her permission.
  • Keep your mouth busy by chewing gum or eating fruits.
  • Have green tea which not only will freshen up your mood, but also keep you miles away from your crave.
  • Think about how much you spend on this addiction.
