Description
Loteprednol Etabonate (LE) is the active component present in Lotemax eye drops. Lotemax eye drops are prescribed for treating inflammation of the eyes caused by allergies, severe acne, herpes zoster (shingles), iritis, and surgery. This formulation is marketed by Bausch and Lomb. It is an ophthalmic suspension. Due to the low water solubility of the active constituent, it is available in the form of a gel, suspension or ointment. Lotemax eye drops drug product works by inhibiting the release of certain endogenous substances than produce pain, itching, and swelling.
The active component, Loteprednol Etabonate (LE) was intentionally engineered to be a ‘soft drug’, one that effectively produces action at the site of action and then quickly breaks down to inactive constituents after producing its effects, thus consequently reducing the risk of side effects. This drug has good ocular permeation properties. Loteprednol is very slowly absorbed into the blood after ocular administration, so the amount of this drug in the blood is extremely small, and, interactions with drugs taken orally or by any route of administration except topical ophthalmic are very unlikely.
